Times tables unlock so much of later maths — but drilling under stress often makes facts harder to stick. Confidence and retrieval practice work better than fear.
Make it playful
Use songs, skipping chants, dice games and “beat your own time” challenges with kindness. Focus on one table at a time until it feels easy.
Mix written and oral practice. Some children know facts aloud long before they can write them quickly.
Link facts to arrays and real objects — egg boxes, Lego bricks, bunches of pencils — so multiplication means something.
Steady support
If home practice keeps ending in tears, a weekly tutoring session can take the emotional heat out of maths. Mrs Moss builds fluency gently alongside school methods.
