5 Simple Ways to Make Reading Fun at Home
Reading should feel like a treat, not a chore. Try these five small, easy ideas to spark a love of books - even with reluctant readers.

Reluctant readers are rarely lazy — they are often tired, worried about getting stuck, or bored by books that feel too hard. Fun comes first; fluency follows.
Five ideas to try this week
1. Dual reading — you read a page, they read a page. Shared effort lowers the pressure.
2. Comic strips and magazines count. Interest beats “serious” books every time at the start.
3. Record a story together on a phone and play it back. Children love hearing themselves succeed.
4. Create a cosy reading nest — same chair, same snack, same short routine after school.
5. Visit a library in Retford or Gainsborough and let them choose anything that hooks them, even if it seems “too easy”.
When tutoring helps
If reading still feels fraught, 1-to-1 phonics or comprehension support can rebuild confidence quickly. In-home sessions mean practice happens in a calm, familiar space.
